Did West Coast Swing Really Begin on the West Coast?

Although West Coast Swing is the "Official Dance" of the state of California, it did not orginate there. WCS originated from an earlier dance known as the Savoy Style Lindy, which was danced at the Savoy Ballroom in New York City in the early 1930's. Collins brought this style of dance with him to L.A. where he went to break into the movie business. He and his partner, Jewel McGowen, starte competing and winning contest with this version of swing. Collins started teaching "his version' to dancers around the city and soon everyone on the West Coast was doing it! In the movies of the 30's and 40's, WCS was billed as the Jitterbug, or Rock and Roll. Soldiers danced this stytle of swin in WWII, and they, along with the USO, took WCS and other forms of swing all over the world.
